Every July, hundreds of thousands of families in Côte d’Ivoire find out which secondary school their child has been placed in by sending four letters — “DOB” — to a five-digit number: 9991. No app, no portal login, no confirmation call. Just a text message into a national system and, if all goes well, a reply.
It’s a useful mirror for anyone running parent communication at a much smaller scale — because it makes visible a structural weakness that most school communication systems share, just at a scale you can actually see.
