Integrated School Management Software Compared
Integrated school management software puts the records a school keeps (attendance, grades, timetables, report cards) and the messages it sends to families into one system, so an absence or a published grade can reach a parent without anyone retyping it. Vendors get there in three ways. A few, like Infinite Campus, Arbor and iSAMS, built messaging into the student information system. PowerSchool bought its communication tool and connected it. A third group, ParentSquare among them, sells only the communication layer and syncs it to whichever SIS the school already runs. The right choice depends on which of those three you need, and on where each vendor keeps your families’ data.
This guide compares the main options on the questions that decide the integration in practice: what is native and what is bolted on, which channels reach parents, how the parent app is rated, and what each vendor publishes about hosting and GDPR. BeeNet is one of the products compared, and we say plainly where it stops.
What does integrated school management software with parent communication include?
Integrated school management software is a system where the administrative record and the family conversation share one database. In practice that means four things:
- Events in the record trigger messages. An absence marked in the register produces a notice to the parent, and a report card published by the office appears on the parent’s phone.
- One roster. Families, classes and teachers are maintained once. A comms tool synced overnight from a separate SIS is integrated only as far as that sync is reliable.
- One parent login for grades, attendance, documents and messages, instead of a portal for records and a separate app for news.
- One data processor, or at least one contract that covers every sub-processor that touches pupil data.
The broader category, including visitor management and event software, is covered in our school management software buyer’s guide. This article is about the narrower question of how well the records side and the communication side work together.
Three ways vendors integrate the SIS and family messaging
Built in. The SIS vendor ships its own messaging module. Infinite Campus Messenger sends by inbox, email, SMS and voice, and can automate attendance notices from SIS events. Email is included, while phone and text are paid add-ons, according to district documentation. Arbor sells a Comms tier alongside its MIS and runs a Parent App and Parent Portal (Arbor data protection guide). iSAMS added a Parent Cloud Portal in December 2024 for absence requests, progress, fee payments, documents and push notifications (iSAMS).
Acquired and connected. PowerSchool completed its $300 million purchase of SchoolMessenger in September 2023 (BusinessWire). SchoolMessenger brings voice, text, email, emergency alerts and translation into more than 100 languages, and PowerSchool pairs its two-way messaging with the My PowerSchool parent portal. The result is strong reach, but it is two products with two histories under one brand.
Communication layer synced to an SIS. ParentSquare is not a student information system. It lists API or SFTP connections to PowerSchool SIS, Skyward, Aeries, Edupoint Synergy, Follett Aspen and others, plus Clever and ClassLink (ParentSquare integrations). For a US district that is happy with its SIS, this is often the most practical route, because the comms layer can be swapped without migrating records.
The integrated school management vendors compared
PowerSchool
PowerSchool is the reference SIS in US K-12. With SchoolMessenger it has the broadest outbound channel mix of any vendor here, including voice calls and emergency alerts, and its PowerSchool Mobile app holds 4.57 out of 5 from 935,844 ratings on the US App Store (checked 9 October 2026). The point to weigh is concentration risk. In December 2024 attackers used compromised credentials on PowerSchool’s support portal to export SIS records from many districts (TechCrunch). PowerSchool never published a total, and the attacker’s claim of about 62 million students remains unconfirmed (BleepingComputer). One integrated system also means one breach exposes both the records and the contact details. Best for: US districts that want one vendor for records, mass notification and emergency alerts.
Infinite Campus
Infinite Campus keeps messaging native to the SIS, which suits schools whose priority is automated notices driven by attendance and grade data. Campus Parent shows attendance, grades, schedules, fees, health and report cards in one place. Customer data sits in US data centres with a separate database per site, and the SOC 2 report is available under NDA (Infinite Campus security). The security page does not mention GDPR. Parent sentiment is the weak spot: Campus Parent rates 1.89 from 2,652 ratings on the US App Store. Best for: US districts that want attendance and grade notices generated straight from the record.
Arbor
Arbor is a UK MIS with communication sold as a tier. Its data protection guide states that personal data and backups are held on AWS in London, and it names its sub-processors, including Vonage for SMS and US-based email providers. The same guide notes that two-factor authentication is not available for the Parent Portal or Parent App. Pricing is partly public through the UK government’s G-Cloud framework, which is unusual in this market. The Arbor Parent App rates 1.39 from 1,975 ratings on the UK App Store. Best for: UK state schools and trusts that want MIS and comms under one G-Cloud contract.
iSAMS
iSAMS covers MIS, admissions, academics, HR, payroll, multi-currency billing and communication, and serves UK independent schools as well as international schools in the Gulf. It advertises full Arabic support including right-to-left layout, and says hosting is planned with each school to match local regulatory expectations, without naming a data-centre location on its Middle East page. There is no public price list. Best for: international and Gulf schools that need billing and HR in the same system as the parent portal.
Pronote and EcoleDirecte
In France, Pronote (Index Éducation) and EcoleDirecte (Aplim) are the vie scolaire systems families already know, with grades, timetables, homework and internal messaging in one place. Pronote’s SaaS service holds ANSSI’s SecNumCloud qualification (ANSSI decision), which is the strongest residency assurance in this comparison. Parent satisfaction with the apps is low: on the French App Store, Pronote rates 1.56 from 31,587 ratings and Mon EcoleDirecte 1.91 from 22,850. Neither offers an Arabic interface. Best for: French collèges and lycées that need a complete, France-hosted vie scolaire system.
BeeNet
BeeNet is built the other way round from an SIS: communication first, with school records added on top of it. Under one parent login it covers attendance (with register and absenteeism exports), grade entry with configurable grading plans, report cards exported as PDF in French, English or Arabic, a homework notebook, timetables and exams, parent-teacher meeting booking, and documents parents can sign electronically. Messaging includes channels, direct messages and announcements, with optional translation of messages into more than 130 languages, SMS campaigns from a prepaid credit wallet, and WhatsApp delivery for invitations. The interface is native French, English and Arabic with full right-to-left layout, and pricing is published, with a free tier for small organisations.
The gaps matter for this specific search. BeeNet has no working connector to PowerSchool, Pronote, Google Classroom or Microsoft, and no single sign-on, so it cannot sit on top of an existing SIS and sync from it. It does not collect tuition or fees from parents. Report-card PDFs are downloaded by the office, not from the parent app, and absence alerts go out as push notifications rather than SMS. If your school already runs an SIS it intends to keep, a sync-based layer such as ParentSquare, or your SIS vendor’s own module, will integrate more cleanly than BeeNet today. Best for: small and mid-sized private schools, especially in France, Belgium, Morocco and the Gulf, that do not have an SIS yet and want records and family messaging in one multilingual system.

GDPR and data residency: what to check before you integrate
Integration raises the stakes on data protection, because the system that stores grades, health notes and custody arrangements is now also the one holding every parent’s phone number and message history. For schools in the EU and UK, four points decide whether an integrated platform is defensible.
1. A processor contract that covers the whole chain. Under GDPR Article 28 the school is the controller and the vendor a processor, bound by a written agreement on instructions, confidentiality, security, deletion and sub-processors. The EDPB’s guidelines on controllers and processors set out how that split works. Ask for the sub-processor list itself. Arbor’s guide shows why: the data is hosted in London, but SMS and email run through providers in the US.
2. Every place the data travels. Transfers outside the EU need a legal basis under Articles 44 to 46. The Court of Justice’s Schrems II judgment struck down Privacy Shield in 2020. Transfers to certified US companies now rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which the EU General Court upheld in Latombe v Commission in September 2025 (Lewis Silkin summary). That ruling can still be appealed, so a platform that keeps pupil data inside the EU never has to rely on it.
3. A DPIA before go-live. Processing children’s data at scale across records and messaging is the kind of processing Article 35 expects a data protection impact assessment for. In England, the DfE’s data protection guidance for schools sets out the school’s duties when it picks a supplier.
4. Security controls on the parent side. A breach of parent accounts is as damaging as one of the admin side. Check whether parents can use two-factor authentication or one-time codes, who on the staff can export data, and whether access changes are logged.
On BeeNet’s side, each organisation carries a data-residency region, and message translation refuses to run until that region is set. It is blocked outright where the translation provider cannot keep processing in-region, which today includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. Custom admin roles cover 22 permission areas, and permission changes are logged with a CSV export. Report-card data has erasure and access-request export built in. For a side-by-side of hosting and residency across communication apps, see our comparison of GDPR-compliant school communication apps.
How to choose: which integration model fits your school?
- You run PowerSchool, Skyward or another US SIS and will keep it. Use the SIS vendor’s own module, or a sync-based layer like ParentSquare. Check the sync frequency and what happens when a guardian changes in the SIS.
- You are a US district and automation from the record matters most. Infinite Campus’s native Messenger generates notices straight from attendance and grade data.
- You are a UK state school or trust. Arbor’s MIS-plus-Comms contract through G-Cloud is the simplest procurement route. Ask about parent-side two-factor authentication.
- You are an international or Gulf school that needs billing and HR too. iSAMS covers finance and payroll in the same platform, with Arabic support.
- You are a French secondary school. Pronote’s SecNumCloud-qualified hosting is hard to match, whatever your view of the app.
- You have no SIS yet and family communication is the daily pain. A communication-first platform with records built in, such as BeeNet, gets you attendance, grades, report cards and messaging under one login without an enterprise SIS project. It is especially relevant if families read French or Arabic.
Whichever route you take, score vendors on the same questions. Our 12 RFP requirements for school communication include the SIS interoperability and data-processing clauses to put in writing.
Frequently asked questions
What is integrated school management software?
It is a system where student records (attendance, grades, timetables, report cards) and parent communication share one database and one parent login. An event in the record, such as an absence, can produce a message to the family automatically, with no manual re-entry.
Which school management systems have built-in parent communication?
Infinite Campus (Messenger), Arbor (Comms tier and Parent App), iSAMS (Parent Cloud Portal), Pronote and EcoleDirecte (internal messaging) build it in. PowerSchool added SchoolMessenger by acquisition in 2023. BeeNet starts from communication and builds attendance, grades and report cards around it.
Is it better to integrate a communication app with my SIS or replace both?
If your SIS works and staff know it, integrate. A sync-based layer such as ParentSquare connects to most US SIS products. Replacing both makes sense when the SIS is a spreadsheet, or when the parent app is so poorly rated that families have stopped opening it.
Which integrated school management systems keep data in Europe?
Pronote is hosted in France and holds SecNumCloud qualification. Arbor states that personal data is held on AWS in London, though some sub-processors are in the US. Infinite Campus hosts in the US. Ask every vendor for its sub-processor list, because the messaging providers are often where data leaves the region.
Does BeeNet integrate with PowerSchool or Pronote?
No. BeeNet has no working connector to PowerSchool, Pronote, Google Classroom or Microsoft today, and no single sign-on. It is designed for schools that use it as their records and communication system together, not as a layer on top of another SIS.
Do integrated systems handle tuition and fee payments?
Several do. Infinite Campus shows fees in Campus Parent, iSAMS includes billing and fee payments, and Arbor sells a finance product. BeeNet does not collect fees from parents.
Is BeeNet the right fit?
For a school that has outgrown spreadsheets and a messaging app but does not want a full SIS project, the problem is usually the gap between where attendance and grades are recorded and where parents actually read news, often in more than one language. BeeNet is one option built for that profile: records and family messaging in one system, in French, English and Arabic, with a public price list. If you already run an SIS you plan to keep, start with your SIS vendor’s module or a sync-based layer instead. To see the attendance, report-card and messaging screens working together, book a demo.
