Saudi School Calendar 1448: The First-Week Message Plan
Students in most of Saudi Arabia start on Sunday 23 August 2026 (10 Rabiʻ I 1448). Students in Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Taif start a week later, on Sunday 30 August 2026 (17 Rabiʻ I 1448) (Okaz). Teachers are back before both, on Sunday 16 August 2026, with a preparation week running 16-20 August. If you serve families or staff across those regions, a single first-day announcement would already be wrong for somebody on your list.
Saudi school calendar 1448: two start dates, one week apart
| Who | Date | Hijri |
|---|---|---|
| Teachers (preparation week 16-20 Aug) | Sun 16 Aug 2026 | 3 Rabiʻ I 1448 |
| Students — rest of the Kingdom | Sun 23 Aug 2026 | 10 Rabiʻ I 1448 |
| Students — Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, Taif | Sun 30 Aug 2026 | 17 Rabiʻ I 1448 |
| Semester 1 ends | Thu 7 Jan 2027 | — |
| Mid-year break | 8-16 Jan 2027 | 30 Rajab - 8 Shaʻban 1448 |
| Semester 2 begins | Sun 17 Jan 2027 | — |
| Year ends | Thu 24 Jun 2027 | 19 Muharram 1449 |
The year runs on the restored two-semester system, held stable across 1447, 1448, 1449 and 1450 (Okaz, Al-Eqtsad), with 180 school days across 38 weeks (WhichSchoolAdvisor) — the standing ministry minimum (وزارة التعليم). The Ministry of Education’s own calendar page is the canonical reference: moe.gov.sa.
Why Jeddah and the western region start a week behind
The four cities sit in the region containing the Two Holy Mosques and absorbing large Umrah and visit traffic; regional education departments hold delegated authority to move the start of the year around the Hajj, Umrah and visit seasons (Wego Rahhal) — no source states the specific reason for the 1448 delay, only the standing power to make it. That matters operationally: it is a delegated regional power exercised inside a Cabinet-approved four-year calendar covering 1447 to 1450, adopted “to ensure educational stability” (Okaz, Al-Eqtsad) — so the current split is fixed through 1450, but the mechanism sits with the regions rather than with a one-off national decree. It also is not limited to the start of the year. In 1447, Eid al-Adha holidays in those same four cities began 15 May 2026 against 22 May 2026 elsewhere (Okaz).
The practical trap is that several widely-read calendar pages never mention it. The Saudi school-directory platform Mdares lists the 23 August start and 24 June year-end in both English and Arabic, and carries nothing at all about the western-region variant (Mdares); WhichSchoolAdvisor and KSA Schools likewise publish the national dates with no regional variation (WhichSchoolAdvisor, KSA Schools). A family in Jeddah checking one of those pages would take away the wrong first day, and nothing on the page would flag the variant.
When school starts in 1448: three clocks, not one
Your first-week plan has to run on at least three separate clocks:
- Administrative staff — back first. In 1447 the sequence was admin 17 August 2025, teachers 24 August 2025, western-region students 31 August 2025 (Al-Eqtsad).
- Teachers — 16 August 2026, a week before students nationally and two weeks before students in the western region (KSA Schools).
- Students and families — 23 or 30 August 2026, depending on the city.
One city, three student start dates
Private and foreign schools are granted authority to set their own calendar within ministry limits (وزارة التعليم), and the typical international three-term year opens around 26 August 2026 (WhichSchoolAdvisor). So a single Saudi city can carry three different student start dates across one week — 23, 26 and 30 August 2026 — plus a staff return a week ahead of all of them.
There is a documented case. The British International School of Jeddah opened on 24 August 2025 while ministry-calendar schools in Jeddah opened on 31 August 2025 (BISJ) — a one-week split between two schools a short drive apart. A parent with one child in each sector would have correctly received two different “first day” messages.
Multi-campus operators face the same problem internally. British International School Riyadh runs Al Hamra, Al Waha and the Diplomatic Quarter as three campuses, and publishes its own 2026-2027 calendar rather than the ministry one (The International Schools).
Three more reasons your list needs splitting
The regional split is the headline, but it is not the only reason your list needs dividing. Private and international autonomy is standing national policy, so multiple start dates inside a single city would exist even with no western-region delay at all. The staff-versus-family gap is a separate structural clock that no regional decision touches. And Ramadan hours in February 2027 mean most campuses will run a second in-year schedule change regardless of where they sit. On the available evidence, the 23/30 August split is one of four independent reasons to segment — none of the sources ranks them against each other.
The first-week message plan
1. Split your audience by campus and region before you draft anything. In practice, this looks like two saved audience groups — “Students: national start” and “Students: western region” — plus a third, “Staff”, so a single reminder never fires to all three. The 30 August calendar entry owns the group, so when the department moves the date all three scheduled messages move with it — nobody re-derives the split.
2. Schedule the reminders now, dated to each group. In practice, this looks like a three-message sequence per group: T-7 days, “Term begins Sunday 30 August. Uniform, timings and bus route inside”; T-2 days, three bullets — gate opens 06:45, first bell 07:15, bring water bottle; and morning-of, one line with the gate map. Same skeleton, two different date sets, written once in August.
3. Send the staff track on its own calendar. In practice, this looks like a single message to teachers as soon as this reaches you — the preparation week opens Sunday 16 August — confirming the 16-20 August schedule, room allocations and the induction slot, never bundled into the family announcement, which is still over two weeks away for western-region families.
4. Put the divergent date in the first line, not the footer. In practice, this looks like opening with “Jeddah campus: term starts Sunday 30 August, one week later than the national calendar” — and, on the other track, “All campuses outside the western region: term starts Sunday 23 August.” The exception goes first because the mainstream calendar pages a parent is most likely to check omit the variant entirely.
5. Reach the families who are not in the app. In practice, this looks like an SMS fallback on the T-2 and morning-of messages only, capped at 160 characters, sent to any guardian with no app read receipt in the previous 14 days.
One caveat worth stating plainly: none of these sources measures the effect of any communication method. They establish what the dates are and who they bind. The plan above is operational reasoning about matching messages to those dates, not evidence that a particular approach improves attendance or reduces parent calls.
Saudi academic calendar 2026 2027: the dates after the first week
Message these in the same segmented structure rather than rebuilding it in November (Wego Rahhal, Mdares):
- Saudi National Day — 23 September 2026 (12 Rabiʻ II 1448)
- Autumn break — 20-28 November 2026 (10-18 Jumada II 1448)
- Mid-year break — 8-16 January 2027 (30 Rajab - 8 Shaʻban 1448)
- Founding Day — 22 February 2027 (Ramadan 1448)
- Ramadan — 7 February to 8 March 2027; schools typically run 08:00-13:00 or 09:00-14:00 (WhichSchoolAdvisor)
- Eid al-Fitr break — 19 Ramadan to 5 Shawwal 1448 (late February to mid-March 2027)
- Eid al-Adha break — reported as 7-22 May 2027 by some sources and 11-22 May 2027 by others; confirm with your education department before you publish it to families
One more date needs checking: the end of Semester 2, given as 17 June 2027 in one aggregator against a 24 June 2027 year-end elsewhere. On the year-end itself, the only western-region-specific source gives the same 24 June 2027 date as the national calendar, so the two tracks appear to converge — but no source states that explicitly.
Build the segmentation once, in August
The requirement here is narrow and concrete: one message set, addressed to at least three audiences on three different dates, scheduled in advance, with a fallback channel for families who never open the app. Doing that from a spreadsheet and a broadcast list means re-deriving the split every time the calendar moves.
Purpose-built school communication platforms handle this as a standing structure rather than a seasonal scramble: audience groups that survive the 1449 rollover, so next August the only edit is the date rather than the segmentation, scheduled announcements dated per group, and SMS delivery for the families outside the app. BeeNet is one implementation path — its group segmentation and scheduling are built for exactly this multi-campus, multi-date pattern, and you can see how it maps to your campuses.
The first cohort is back in the building on 16 August 2026. The national student cohort follows on 23 August and the western-region cohort on 30 August. Those dates are fixed; the only open question is whether your message plan is built before the first of them arrives.
