Class Points: How They Work, Where They Fail
Class points are a running tally — awarded to a whole class, a table group, or an individual student — that accumulate toward a shared reward. They’re one of the most common classroom-management tools in use, and also one of the most misunderstood: the same mechanic that has a genuine research base behind it, in one configuration, has a documented history of backfiring in another. Whether class points work in your classroom depends less on the idea itself and more on which version of it you’re running — whole-class or individual, visible or private, consistent or improvised.
Below is what class points actually are, what the evidence says about when they help and when they don’t, how named products like ClassDojo and Classcraft fit into the picture, and how to build a version that holds up.
What Are Class Points, Exactly?
“Class points” covers a specific mechanism inside a broader category psychologists call a token economy — a system in which a stand-in reward (a point, a token, a checkmark) is handed out immediately after a target behavior and later exchanged for a real one (a privilege, a class party, extra recess). The mechanism is straight operant conditioning: presenting a stimulus right after a behavior increases how often that behavior happens again.
Class points typically show up in one of two structures:
- Whole-class or team points, where a group — the whole class, or a table of four to six students — earns or loses points together, and the outcome (win or lose the reward) is shared. Nobody’s individual status is singled out; the team absorbs the result.
- Individual points, where a single student accumulates their own tally, redeemable on their own schedule. This can run privately (a card on a desk, visible only to that student and the teacher) or publicly (a chart the whole class can see) — and that visibility choice matters more than almost anything else about the design.
The best-documented named example of the team-points structure is the Good Behavior Game, first published in 1969 by a 4th-grade teacher, Muriel Saunders, working with University of Kansas researchers Harriet Barrish and Montrose Wolf. Teams lose a point each time a member breaks a defined rule during an activity (talking out, leaving a seat); a team that stays under a set threshold — commonly fewer than four points — earns a preferred activity. That last part is the Premack principle at work: using access to something students already want to do as the reinforcer for doing something they’re less inclined to do.
The Evidence: Where Class Points Systems Work
The Good Behavior Game has an unusually long evidence trail for a classroom intervention. Longitudinal research out of Johns Hopkins followed thousands of students — some from first grade into their twenties — and found lower rates of aggression and disruptive behavior, plus gains in writing and math performance, among students whose early classrooms ran the game. That’s a rare thing in education research: a specific, named, decades-old intervention with a decades-long follow-up.
The broader token-economy mechanism has its own research base outside the classroom, too. Its formal origin is Ayllon and Azrin’s 1961 token economy at Anna State Hospital, an adult psychiatric setting, with classroom adoption following later. Inside K-12 classrooms specifically, a systematic evaluation found token economies “generally effective in reducing problem behavior among students with challenging behavior.”
None of this means points work automatically. Effectiveness in every study tracks closely with implementation discipline — which rewards back the points, how consistently they’re awarded, how predictable the exchange schedule is. A points system with vague or shifting rules doesn’t inherit the evidence built on well-run ones.
Where They Fail
The research literature on token economies names three specific, non-hypothetical failure modes:
They fade when removed. Behavior improvements documented under a points system tend to disappear once the system stops. The system functions more like a prosthesis — propping up a behavior while it’s active — than a durable, internalized change. If the plan is to run points for a term and then quietly retire them, expect the gains to retire too, unless something else takes over the job points were doing.
A meaningful minority don’t respond. Roughly 5 to 20% of participants in token-economy research don’t respond, or respond only minimally, to the system. It is not a universal fix, even on its own terms — a class points system is one tool that works for most students, not a guarantee for every one.
Inconsistent staff execution breaks it. Many real-world token-economy programs have failed specifically because of inconsistent application by the adults running them, not because the underlying mechanism was flawed. A points board is only as reliable as the person awarding the points.
Class points aren’t the whole motivation story
There’s a genuine, ongoing debate in the research about whether external rewards like points can quietly undercut a student’s own interest in a task — the “overjustification effect.” Early lab studies (Deci, 1971; Lepper, Greene & Nisbett, 1973) found that rewarding people for something they already enjoyed reduced their voluntary engagement with it afterward. Later work pushed back, showing the effect depends heavily on the details: rewards are more likely to backfire on tasks a student already finds interesting, and less likely to on tasks they don’t; a reward that signals “you did this well” tends to preserve motivation better than one that signals “do this or else.” The honest summary, not the flattened one: points can undercut intrinsic motivation for specific tasks under specific conditions — it’s a real risk to design around, not a settled verdict against the whole idea.
Team Points vs. Individual Points: Which to Use
The choice between team and individual points isn’t just a preference — it changes which failure mode you’re exposed to. Team points, because the group absorbs the outcome, sidestep the single biggest risk with individual points: turning one child’s status into something the whole room can read. The safer default for individual points, if you need them at all, is to keep them private — visible to that student and their family, not projected to the room. PBIS’s own recommendation leans the same direction: shift from public, punitive tracking toward acknowledgment systems that name specific positive behavior, paired with an explicit equity check on whether the system lands the same way across every group of students.
ClassDojo, Classcraft, and Gamified Point Systems
Two named products dominate the “gamified class points” category, and it’s worth understanding what each actually is before choosing one.
ClassDojo, launched in 2011 out of Y Combinator’s ImagineK12 accelerator, reached 9.6 million teachers and students across 30+ countries within roughly a year — its own Wikipedia entry calls it “a high-tech twist on the teacher’s classic gold star,” where teachers give students point-based feedback tied to named skills, visible to families. It’s also drawn real, attributed criticism: a 2017 London School of Economics post warned it could collect sensitive behavior data without clear parent notification; researchers cited in coverage of the app argue it can normalize surveillance and turn the classroom into “constant competition for a teacher’s attention”; and some teachers report the ease of parent contact it enables has increased the volume of tense, in-the-moment emails from families.
Classcraft is widely known as a gamified classroom-management product that layers game elements — teams, points, character-style progression — onto behavior tracking. Product specifics change often enough that we’d rather send you to check the current feature set directly than repeat numbers that may be stale by the time you read this. What’s worth knowing in general is the category-level critique from game theorist Ian Bogost: gamification limited to “progress mechanics such as points, badges and leaderboards” tends toward being “simplistic and manipulative” — a fair question to ask of any points product, named or not, before adopting it.

Age Bands: When a Class Points System Fits
Class points assume a student can wait — hold a delayed reward in mind across a morning, a day, a week. That’s a developmental capacity that shows up gradually through early childhood and is well established by the start of elementary school, which is also where the evidence base above actually sits: the Good Behavior Game was built for a 4th-grade classroom, and the token-economy literature is overwhelmingly K-5 and up. Nothing in that literature describes accumulated point or token systems as age-appropriate for toddlers or preschoolers; the field’s guidance for that age band is built instead around immediate tools — specific verbal praise in the moment, physical affection, one-on-one attention — because a two- or three-year-old can’t meaningfully bank a point today for a payoff on Friday. How to Run a Class Points System Well
Four adjustments carry most of the evidence above into an actual classroom:
Keep the win shared, not individual, by default. In practice, this looks like a Good Behavior Game-style setup: a table’s points post to one shared corner of the whiteboard, updated at two or three fixed checkpoints in the day — after morning meeting, after lunch, at dismissal — rather than announced out loud every time a point moves. No child’s name attaches to a loss in front of the room.
Award points on a fixed, predictable schedule. Vague or improvised timing is the specific failure mode implementation research points to. Decide in advance when points are checked and awarded, write it down, and stick to it — the schedule is doing as much work as the reward.
Plan the fade before you start, not after. Because gains documented under a points system tend to fade once the system stops, decide up front how you’ll wind it down — gradually stretching the interval between checkpoints, or pairing points with descriptive praise (“you got that point because you helped Sam find his page”) so the verbal recognition can eventually carry the weight alone.
Watch for the 5-to-20%. If a student isn’t responding to the class-wide system after a couple of weeks of consistent application, that’s expected, not a sign you’re running it wrong — it’s the documented non-response rate showing up in your room, and it’s the cue to move that student to an individually designed plan rather than assuming they need more of the same points.
The Version You Choose Is the Decision That Matters
That’s a narrower requirement than most classroom-points advice admits — team over individual, private over public, scheduled over improvised, with an exit plan built in from day one — and it’s one that purpose-built school tools are starting to support directly rather than leaving to a paper chart or a spreadsheet.
